History

Spring 2017: The team is founded in January in response to growing desire among members of the 20s-30s group to engage in activism in the Upham’s Corner community. The group went through the Leadership Development Initiative’s Flagship Training Program in community organizing, did a listening campaign to learn about neighbors’ concerns about gentrification and displacement and threw a neighborhood block party on Memorial Day to which over 75 people came. Over the summer of 2017, the group hosted a mini block party in a nearby park which was also well-attended.

Fall 2017: The team begins connecting with local groups already working on issues of gun violence and gentrification through neighborhood organizations and city planning commissions. Local nonprofits and the city are excited to work with us because of our grassroots outreach in the spring and the power in our numbers and connection to St Mary’s.

Spring 2018: The team hosts a neighborhood conversation about issues of gun violence and gentrification facing the neighbors, films it, and shares it with the city. The team explores partnering with a local nonprofit to maximize impact.
