Massachusetts Communities Action Network (MCAN) is a network of faith-based community organizations in MA working for economic and racial justice. We are inspired by our faith traditions’ deep and enduring call to justice. Organizations in MCAN are found in Dorchester, Brockton, Lynn, Springfield, Worcester, and Fall River/New Bedford. MCAN belives in a grassroots organizing model rooted in a critical racial and power analysis. We organize from a leadership base of those who are closest to the issues we work on – leaders of color, immigrant leaders, working class leaders, and leaders who have been incarcerated or have family members who are incarcerated. For more information and to get involved, go to www.mcan-pico.org, or contact us at 617-982-8129.

Jose Mateo Ballet Theater

Founded in 1986, José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s company and school have forged a new model for a ballet organization through innovative programming, artistic excellence, and extensive community outreach. Critically acclaimed, José Mateo Ballet Theatre is distinguished as the only ballet company in New England to produce an entire repertory by it’s own resident choreographer.

After performing at Boston’s Emerson Majestic Theatre for a decade, the company has been based at the Sanctuary Theatre since 2001.

The school, which provides expert dance training to young dancers ages 3-18 and adults of all ages and levels, has been a leader in creating broader access to the art form. It has developed an inclusive approach with new teaching methods that allow students to excel beyond expectation.

The mission of Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre is to:

  • Create new ballets of excellence that are stimulating and culturally relevant to diverse audiences
  • Create an innovative approach to ballet training that welcomes diversity, and ensures unanimous participation and achievement by all students
  • Create sustainable, inclusive and engaging outreach programs that make ballet accessible to participants of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Reposition the role of dance in our culture and expand its purpose in the education of youth and enrichment of community locally and beyond

Classes at St Mary’s are on Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays. You can learn more and sign up for classes here.
